GMO-free Regions is an international network and campaign platform around genetically modified organisms in agriculture. The existing website had been running on TYPO3 for many years and had accumulated a large amount of conference material, country information and background content. The task was to move this site to WordPress without losing that history, and at the same time make the structure easier to navigate and maintain for the editors.
The project was a full rebuild in WordPress with a strong focus on careful content migration. Custom post types were introduced for conferences and countries, so that events and regional information can be managed consistently and reused across the site. For the conference archive, previous events were migrated manually, including sessions, speakers, media and related documents, and then mapped into the new structure. This involved a substantial amount of tidying, re-linking and normalising data to ensure everything is coherent in the new system.
In the process, I also created a completely new design, making it more modern and fresh.
Summary
This was a very interesting, yet time-consuming project. Much of the data was complex to migrate automatically, so had to be rebuilt manually. Especially the conferences contained a lot of very detailed information and it was important to preserve this historical record.
